Services set for prison officer who died after struggle with inmate

Services have been scheduled for a Central Texas prison corrections officer who died in a medical emergency after a struggle with an inmate.

Shana Tedder, 41, of Killeen, died last Friday after what was described as a use-of-force incident involving in inmate at the Christina Melton Crain Unit in Gatesville.

A wake will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Crawford Bowers Funeral Home at 1615 South Fort Hood Road in Killeen.

A funeral service begins at noon Saturday at the funeral home.

Burial will follow at Killeen City Cemetery.

Tedder was born in Temple graduated from Killeen High School and majored in criminal justice at Prairie View A&M University in hopes of becoming an attorney.

She complained of shortness of breath after the altercation last Friday, walked to another area of the prison to rest and then collapsed after helping subdue a female offender who became disruptive and struck a male officer.

Staff members started life-saving measures and called 911, however, paramedics were unable to revive the officer, he said.

Tedder had worked for the TDCJ since 2005.

She leaves behind a daughter and a brother.
