A man was found dead Thursday after flames engulfed a rural home north of Waco.

The 62-year-old man was found near an open window, neighbors said.

He evidently was able to place a 911 call before he was overcome by the smoke, a neighbor said.

McLennan County Sheriff Parnell McNamara later confirmed the neighbors' accounts.

The man's name wasn't immediately released.

Firefighters from several departments responded early Thursday after the fire broke out shortly after 3 a.m. Thursday in the home in the 500 block of East Hilltop Lane in Elm Mott.

A sheriff's official confirmed the death, but had no further details.

Crews from Lacy Lakeview, Ross, West and Elm Mott responded.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
