Killeen: Homeowner opens fire after teenager breaks in; suspect later dies
A Killeen homeowner opened fire Friday morning on a teenager who broke into his home and the suspect later died at a local hospital, police said late Friday afternoon.
James Centron Taylor Mitchell, Jr., 18, forced his way into a home in the 4200 block of Corinne Drive north of Clear Creek Road east of Killeen-Fort Hood Regional Airport.
“The homeowner armed himself and fired gunshots towards the suspect; the suspect fled the area,” police spokeswoman Ofelia Miramontez said.
Officers responded to the home at around 9:50 a.m. and less than 10 minutes later Mitchell was found about six miles away from the home on Woodlake Drive, she said.
He was taken to Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center where he died, she said.
Initial reports indicated he was shot repeatedly in the chest.
An autopsy was ordered.
