Waco: Developer turns shipping containers into shopping complex

WACO, Texas (KWTX) A developer is using old shipping containers to turn an old warehouse into Waco’s newest shopping destination.

Shipping containers at The Containery are filling up, not with inventory but with local businesses.

The complex will offer food, shopping and boutique stores the entire family can enjoy.

“We’re excited about how the inside of the building will turn out,” Gregg Glime, a realtor with Coldwell Banker said.

“I think the concept will work out really well for where it's located downtown.”

The complex will be on South 4th street, two blocks away from the Magnolia Market.

"Customers are going to be able to walk into The Containery and it will be an experience,” Glime said.

“You can get wood fired pizza, a gourmet hamburger and then walk outside to the container and walking into a clothier... jewelry"

The realtor even said people will be able to live on top of the three story shopping center.

Glime expects 30-40 businesses to fill up the 25,000-square-foot shopping center.

"Not only is it recycling, it's green the developers going after and it helps on the overall costs of the developers and retailers that will end up in the development"

Glime said the use of storage containers allows him to rent out containers for nearly half the price as downtown competitors

Although there is still a lot of work to be done, Glime is confident this unconventional shopping center will be a hit in central Texas.

The Containery is expected to open in the fall. Containers are already available for rent.
