Sinkhole shuts down busy local street; repairs could take weeks
A stretch of a busy East Waco street is closed to traffic after a sinkhole formed Monday morning.
Westbound traffic on East Herring Avenue between Dan Rowe Street and J J Flewellen Road will be diverted until repairs can be made, Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said.
City officials think, but have not yet confirmed, that the sinkhole may have been caused by a collapsed 24-inch sewer main in the 900 block of East Herring.
“No sewage was released to the surrounding area and public health is not in danger,” the city said in an updated press release.
Traffic was being detoured, using Dallas Street and Faulkner Lane.
Repairs could take at least three to four weeks, the city said.
