TEMPLE, Texas (KWTX) Hundreds of Marines gathered in Temple on Saturday to celebrate the US Marine Corps' 243rd birthday.
The ceremony was held at the American Legion Post 133. The Marine Corps was founded Nov. 10, 1775.
“Every Marine considers this their other birthday. The birth of the Corps is very special to us. This is a chance and opportunity to get together and celebrate our birthday along with our fellow Marines from every generation still alive. We had World War II veterans here today and currently serving active duty Marines," Ed Bandas said.
Along with remarks from the Central Texas Marines Organization, the guest speaker was Mark Austin Byrd.
Byrd was a combat helicopter pilot during Vietnam and now is a celebrated sculptor whose work honors veterans.
The celebration also featured the traditional cake-cutting ceremony and prizes.
