GRAYSON COUNTY, Texas (KXII) A man spotted a black bear walking in his backyard, a rare sighting in Grayson County.
The bear was seen about six miles north of Pottsboro near the lake at Preston Point Peninsula.
Grayson County Game Warden Bryan Newman says if you ever see a black bear, don't approach it, even though they'll usually run away from people.
He says they're always searching for food so to keep pet food inside if you can and trash in the garage.
It's illegal to shoot a black bear in Texas.
"You don't see black bears in Texas very often, but you will see them every now and then. A lot of the states around Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, they do have bear so they will cross the river and end up in Texas sometimes," Newman said.
He said if you shoot a black bear in Texas, you could face up to a $10,000 fine plus civil restitution, jail time or even loss of hunting privileges.
