Thieves stole two U-Haul trucks over the weekend, but abandoned them after local officers spotted them, and then stole a third in a failed bid to steal construction materials, Waco police said Monday.

Officers spotted two of the stolen trucks just after 1 a.m. on Saturday in the area of the 1600 block of La Salle Avenue.

The drivers attempted to evade the officers, police spokesman Garen Bynum said Monday, and then ran.

“This raised suspicion with the officers when they located another U-Haul truck attempting to gain access to the property at 1600 La Salle” at around 5:45 a.m. Saturday.

Officers detained and questioned the driver who admitted he had taken the truck with the intention of stealing construction materials from a lumber company at 1600 La Salle, Bynum said.

Luis Valentin Reveles, 35, remained in the McLennan County Jail Monday charged with unlawful use of a criminal instrument, criminal trespass and attempted theft over $2,500, but under $30,000.

His bonds total $28,000, according to online records, and he’s held without bond on an immigration detainer.

A second suspect ran and has not been found, Bynum said.
