A majestic Oak tree in rural central Texas has been badly damaged and some fear its days are numbered.

It's called the Wedding Oak because for as long as anyone can remember, wedding ceremonies were held beneath its sprawling branches.

Legend has it that Native Americans performed weddings and council meetings there long before white men ever saw it.

The Wedding Oak is on CR 200 just outside of San Saba.

The tree recently lost a limb that was more than ten feet in diameter, devastating the historic appearance of the tree and damaging some fences beneath it.

The Wedding Oak, which is nearly 20 feet in diameter, is listed in the book of famous trees of Texas and is one of the oldest in the state.

Residents say that a group of experts from Texas A&M estimated that the Wedding Oak is more than a thousand years old.
