Police in Copperas Cove are investigating after a train struck and killed a person who was walking on the tracks late Thursday morning.

The train's crew reported the accident at around 11 a.m. in the 1200 block of West Avenue B.

The victim, who died at the scene, was identified in a Friday morning news release as 29-year-old Kurtis Michael Roemeling.

“The train operator noticed the pedestrian and immediately activated the emergency stopping system for the train while signaling with the horn,” police said in a press release.

“The pedestrian did not take evasive action to get away from the train before being struck.”

The Burlington Northern Santa Fe train consisted of two engines and seven cars, four of which were empty.

The accident happened almost two years after a train struck and killed a teenager in the same area.

On March 22, 2017, Copperas Cove High School Student Alexander Stout, 16, was hit by a train as he walked on the tracks near the school in the 700 block of West Avenue D.

The two BNSF employees who were on the train were not hurt.

The train was en route from Sweetwater to Temple at the time of the accident.
