A trial date has been set for two former Gatesville police officers who were indicted in December for tampering with evidence and failure to report information related to a criminal case.

Christopher Cato was set to stand trial in August and Ronald Schmidt will have his day in court in November, retired 368th District Judge Burt Carnes ordered Tuesday.

Carnes was sitting in for 52nd District Court Judge Trent Farrell, who earlier recused himself from the case.

The Coryell County Grand Jury issued sealed indictments against both men in December 2018 after the former officers were accused of “line of duty” incidents related to a May 2017 investigation.

The indictments showed that both officers were investigating a case revolving around the reported sexual assault of a minor child.
