Temple: State joins investigation after 2 children found dead in home
The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services confirmed Tuesday it is conducting a joint investigation with Temple police after officers found a 2-year-old boy and a 1-year-old girl dead Monday in a home along with a woman who was conscious, but unresponsive and two other girls, ages 4 and 6, who were placed in the custody of Child Protective Services.
A judge signed a temporary order remanding the children to the custody of CPS and a hearing later this month will decide whether the placement should be permanent.
Police released no additional information about the deaths Tuesday.
Salvation Army employees, who were working with the family, called police Monday morning after going to the home to do a welfare check.
Officers made entry into the house and found the bodies after responding to the call just before 11:40 a.m. Monday at West Avenue P and South 35th Street.
The children whose bodies officers found appeared to have been dead for some time, police said.
The woman, whose name has not been released, was taken to Scott & White Medical Center.
The woman appeared to be in a catatonic state, an officer said.
Police obtained a search warrant and then re-entered the home late in the afternoon.
No further details were have been released.
Area residents have created a makeshift memorial of stuffed animals and flowers outside the home.
