UIL review of local player’s attack on rival concludes
A University Interscholastic League review of an attack by a University High School freshman football player on a player from a rival team who ended up with a concussion is closed, UIL spokeswoman Kate Hector confirmed in an email Friday.
The UIL’s District 5-5A Executive Committee discussed and then accepted the penalties issued by the Waco ISD, she said.
“Since the (District Executive Committee) accepted the penalties issued by Waco ISD, the State Executive Committee will not meet on this case and the UIL investigation has concluded,” she said.
The incident happened on Sept. 13 as University hosted the freshman team from Burleson.
The videos show the University player throwing the Burleson player to the ground and pounding his head against the playing surface three times.
The player’s mother, Jennifer Gower, posted the videos on her Facebook page.
In the post she said her son has missed three games because of a concussion he suffered during the game in Waco.
The University player was ejected from the game and then according to University Interscholastic League policy, was suspended for one half of the next game.
The Burleson player's mother, however, said she didn’t think the Waco ISD's action was sufficient.
"If that's all they're going to do, it's unacceptable. And I'm here to stay that's unacceptable. Something more needs to be done," she said.
