WACO, Texas (KWTX) The caiman exhibit in the Cameron Park Zoo Herpetarium is damaged after a first grader from College Station visiting the zoo on a field trip Wednesday tried to throw a rock into the enclosure and shattered the glass instead, leaving a cracked mess behind.

Caimans are closely related to alligators, but are smaller.

Interim Zoo Director Johnny Binder said the event was very unusual and unlike anything he’d seen before.

Binder said the caiman was taken off exhibit and will remain out of the public eye until the costly repairs are made.

Replacement and installation of the shatter-proof glass will cost about $10,000, Binder said.

The case has been forwarded to the city of Waco’s insurance company.,

Repairs could take one to two months.
