Waco: Magnolia Foundation gives $70K in sports gear to local organizations
It was an early morning for 40 magnolia employees, but they brought plenty of energy as they boxed over $70,000 worth of sporting equipment that will be donated to the Bledsoe Miller Recreation Center, the Boys & Girls Club of Waco, the Doris Miller YMCA and Special Olympics Texas- Heart of Texas.
“This is our community so when needs arise in the community, we want to give back,” said Lyle Mason, Executive Director of the Magnolia Foundation. “And so that's why we are here. We are blessed to call Waco home, and we love giving back. “
In order to accomplish this, the Magnolia Foundation partnered with Good Sports, a national nonprofit out of Boston that specializes in providing sports equipment to those in need. Their mission is simple, give every child an opportunity to be active and involved in sports.
“It's kind of understanding their needs, understanding what we have access to, and also what has been successful for us in the past,” said Courtney Schermerhorn with Good Sports. “The kind of tying that all together and making sure that impact is going to be felt around Waco.”
According to leaders of these youth organizations, this impact will be felt, and will help keep children in these programs, hopefully influencing their future in a positive manner.
“I think it's a win win when kids are involved in some program,” said Rodney Martin, CEO of the YMCA of Central Texas. “I would rather those kids be involved in something that's positive that's impacting their life, because that's going to direct their future and where they are going.”
