There were a few hiccups at the start of Monday for the new Jubilee Market but workers said Monday was a great day.

The new grocery store at North 15th Street and Colcord Avenue in Waco is Mission Waco’s newest project.

The organization held a soft opening Monday.

Rose Marie Gonzales and her grandson were among the first shoppers.

They walked to pick up items for dinner.

“This is within 5 blocks of my home and it's easy for me to get (here) than the H-E-B,” Gonzales said.

“I have to rely on someone to take me and sometimes that can be hard.”

The store is in the heart of North Waco, an area that’s depressed and considered to be a food desert, which means there is limited to no access to fresh fruits and vegetables.

The store is more than 10 years in the making.

More than half a million dollars was donated by the public to get it up and running.

While the store is giving residents access to fresh, healthy foods, workers said it also supplies them with jobs.

The store is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. most days, but is closed on Sundays.
