WACO, Texas (KWTX) The Waco Independent School District Board of Trustees will fill two vacancies on the school board by appointment.
That decision was made Thursday night during the board's monthly meeting.
Trustees wanted to fill the openings before the board beings reviewing applications from candidates to become the district's next superintendent on June 24.
Angela Tekell, who trustees elected as new board president says, “The decision about Waco ISD’s next superintendent is easily one of the most important decisions that this board will make."
"Every neighborhood, every family deserves to be represented on the board when we make that decision. Filling these vacancies by special election would have left the seats vacant until long after the superintendent search has concluded," Tekell says.
This decision comes following the resignations of former board president Pat Atkins, and former board member Larry Perez.
The open positions are for an at-large seat representing the
entire school district and one representing Trustee District 3.
Both individuals appointed to the vacancies will serve until May 2020.
Individuals interested should submit a letter expressing their interest no later than May 31.
Letters can be emailed to email@example.com or sent to the board’s
attention at 501 Franklin Ave, Waco, TX 76701.
According to a press release from the district, "to be eligible to be appointed, a person must be a United States citizen, be 18 years of age or older, have resided continuously in Texas for the past 12 months, and have been registered to vote for the past six months in the area that he or she will represent."
The school board will hold a special meeting June 3 to review those interested in both positions.
A tentatively scheduled meeting will be held June 5 to interview the selected candidates.
The appointments could be made at the boards meeting on June 20.
