Police confirmed Friday that a body found in a ditch late Thursday afternoon in the area of South 20th Street and Mary Avenue between Franklin Avenue and Waco Creek is that of an elderly Waco woman who’s been the focus of a three-day search.

A Silver Alert was issued Wednesday afternoon for Lelia Norfus, 75, who was last seen Tuesday at around 7 p.m. walking in the 3200 block of East Edmond Avenue.

Authorities said it appears the 115-pound woman, who had been diagnosed with a cognitive impairment, fell into the ditch and couldn’t get out.

Distraught members of her family were at the scene Thursday evening.

Family members had spent hours passing out fliers, knocking on doors and walking through North Waco neighborhoods in hopes of finding the missing woman.

An autopsy was ordered.

It’s not clear how the woman, who used a walker, ended up about two miles from her home

The investigation is ongoing.
