WOODWAY, Texas (KWTX) Woodway police officers have captured a wanted man, armed with a handgun, who fled from an attempted traffic stop early Thursday morning.

Next Elijah Vern'London Rutledge, 20, of Waco, was being held in the McLennan County Jail Thursday night on six charges from various agencies.

Rutledge was charged by Woodway PD with unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, unlawful carry of a weapon, evading in a vehicle, and evading on foot.

He also had a charge from Waco PD of sexual assault-motion to adjudicate, and a charge of unauthorized absence from a correctional facility by the McLennan County Sheriff's Office.

Rutledge remained jailed Friday in lieu of bonds totaling $290,000.

According to Woodway Public Safety Department officials, patrol officers tried to stop a suspicious vehicle just before 3:20 a.m. in the 8800 block of Bosque Blvd.

The driver fled to the Wood Creek neighborhood, then jumped out of the moving vehicle with his passenger and ran.

A short time later, officers found the driver and took him into custody.

Police say the driving suspect was armed with a handgun and later found several stolen items, including stolen firearms, inside the vehicle.

WPSD officials say they are looking to identify the passenger suspect as well as the victims who the stolen property belongs to.

"WPSD would like to once again stress the importance of locking your vehicles, garages, and locking up your valuables," officials said in a Facebook post. "Take your firearms out of your vehicle during the evening hours to prevent them from being stolen."

"Far too many firearms taken from unlocked vehicles are ending up on the streets of our community."
