BELTON, Texas (KWTX) Police Wednesday identified a man who shot himself to death during a struggle with a Belton police detective as Jacob Cadena, 21, of Belton.

Cadena was wanted in connection with a weekend assault after his girlfriend filed a report with police at 6 p.m. Monday alleging that he punched, pistol-whipped, choked and threatened to kill her, City of Belton spokesman Paul Romer said in a press release Wednesday.

Patrol officers spotted Cadena just before noon Tuesday walking near the 700 block of 2nd Avenue of Belton.

“Cadena, whom police believed to be armed, refused repeated requests to stop and talk about the weekend incident,” Romer said.

A detective in an unmarked unit pulled in front of Cadena in the 500 block of 2nd Avenue as other officers followed the man.

“Cadena then walked across the street, while reaching into his waistband,” Romer said.

“In an attempt to subdue Cadena, a detective grabbed him from behind, but Cadena used a gun he was carrying to shoot himself in the head," he said.

Paramedics performed CPR at the scene, but were unable to save the man, whose name was not immediately released.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.
