West: Services set for patriarch of landmark car dealership

WEST, Texas (KWTX) Funeral services have been scheduled for Sykora Family Ford founder Ed Sykora who died Tuesday afternoon at his home at the age of 83.

A rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Friday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption at 301 South Harrison St, in West.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

The dealership will be closed Saturday for the funeral.

Sykora, who was born on Aug. 28, 1934 in Penelope, worked as a carpenter and at a cotton gin before he started his automotive career in 1955 in the parts department of Bird-Kultgen Ford in Waco and in 1961 in parts and sales at Kozelski Motor Company in West.

In 1968 he became co-owner of the dealership and in 1982 he became the sole owner.

In 1984 Kozelski Motors became Sykora Family Ford.

He and his wife Dorothy have ten children, most of whom have worked at the dealership over the years.

Proud of its Czech heritage, the Sykora family has been part of the West community since the 1870’s.
