West Point cadets to attend funeral of classmate killed at Fort Hood
Dozens of West Point cadets are expected to travel to northern Indiana this week for the funeral of a fellow cadet who was among nine soldiers killed when an Army transport truck with 12 troops aboard overturned with and was swept away at a low-water crossing at Fort Hood.
Between 75 and 90 West Point cadets will attend the funeral Saturday at Chesterton High School for fellow cadet Mitchell Winey, 21, of Valparaiso, Ind., who died in the training accident on June 2.
John Swibes of Chesterton is helping arrange housing for the cadets who will attend Winey's funeral.
He told The Munster Times that there's been "a huge outpouring from the community.
Winey was due to graduate with the U.S. Military Academy at West Point Class of 2018.
He was a graduate of Chesterton High School.
He reported to West Point on July 2, 2014.
