A fire that broke out Wednesday at a recycling plant outside of Waco continued to smolder Thursday.

The fire is contained and Speegleville firefighters say it could burn for several days.

The fire broke out in a mulch pit at the Waco Wood Recycling & Materials plant on Antler Road and then spread to wood pallets and other material on the site.

Authorities urged residents in nearby homes on McLaughlin Road, Dosher Lane and Cherokee Trail to evacuate as a precaution, but said the evacuation was voluntary.

A firefighter and several employees of the recycling company were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and heat exhaustion, officials said.

Firefighters from several departments battled the fire, which produced smoke and flames that were visible for several miles.
