WACO, Texas (KWTX) Dozens of residents and city leaders braved the cold Friday afternoon at Martin Luther King Jr. Park in Waco to participate in the 30th annual wreath-laying ceremony in honor of the late civil rights leader.

The ceremony kicked off several days of events designed to bring the community together.

Cleo Carroll said she was attending for the first time this year, after spending years admiring the wreaths from afar.

“I just wanted to see the laying of the wreaths“, she says.

“And I'm here to honor him.”

Former Waco School Board President Coque Gibson, says the wreaths serve as a reminder of who King was and the message he tried to instill in Americans with his historic ‘I have a dream’ speech.

“We are not based on the color of our skin, but it's the content of our character,” she says, quoting the reverend.

She wants the events scheduled over the next few days to unite the community with a common purpose.

“As to who people are- we are all one,” she says.
