CRAWFORD, Texas (KWTX) In the 21st century, the Crawford Pirates have recorded double-digit victories 12 times.
They've won a state championship (2004) and gone undefeated in the regular season five times.
But in 2018, the Pirates finished 5-6, the first time since 2000 that the program finished with a losing record.
They made the playoffs as the number three seed out of a district 7-2A that includes state semifinalist San Saba, but the Pirates were blown out in the first round by Riesel 59-13.
"It still comes down to what you do this year, and we approach it that way every time," head coach Delbert Kelm said. "What you did last year, that's history. You can use it to help you, but this team's got to set its own destiny."
Kelm enters his 13th season as head coach of the Pirates, who will have little experience in the trenches, but there's still plenty of time to figure out who will be the best fit and where.
Crawford is a run-first team, and the guys gaining those yards should be a strong part of this team.
"We had a really good core of seniors that did a great job this summer in strength and conditioning," Kelm said. "(I) certainly wish we had a bit more than what we did, but there are the guys that will set the tone for the team, and that's certainly what you want."
Crawford begins the season Fri., August 30, at home against Tolar.
