LOTT, Texas (KWTX) The Rosebud-Lott Cougars went 2-8 a season ago, but were close to picking up three or four wins total if not for a couple close losses in district play.
Rosebud-Lott went through a head coaching change over the offseason. Rafael Williams takes over for Brad Ballard, who went 15-36 in five seasons as head coach of the Cougars.
"Because I already know most of the kids, developing relationships, that part was already there," Williams said. "Now is just basically Xs and Os, offensive and defensive philosophy and maintaining those relationships on a different level as a head coach."
The Cougars will be more on the inexperienced side, especially at the quarterback position. But the non-district schedule is a perfect time to work on these things.
"I have to catch myself and remember, 'Hey, you have sophomores and first-year guys at a position," Williams said. "It's definitely a learning curve, but you also want to make sure they're progressing day in and day out, and not making the same mistakes over and over."
"Last year, we had a lot of returning starters," senior running back and linebacker Adrian Valdez said. "This year, we have a young team. There's a lot of new things to learn."
Rosebud-Lott opens the season on the road at Anderson-Shiro.
