WACO, Texas (KWTX) The University Trojans at one point had lost 47 straight games. Not only did Rodney Smith's team make that come to an end, but they picked up a couple more wins after that.
"We broke the streak, and won two more games after that, but we didn't make the playoffs," senior running back Jeremiah Stroupe said. "We didn't do what we wanted, and we didn't beat Waco High last year. We should've done that, too."
"Come together as a team more and be a little more disciplined, and we'll be there," senior defensive back Gabriel Russell said. "I feel like we have more people that want to win this year than last year."
The players are ready to take the next step, just as long as it doesn't equal a record below .500. They can start out on a high note with a win in week one against intra-city rival Waco High, a team that's beaten University nine straight times.
"(We're trying to) beat Waco High, for one, and go to the playoffs," senior linebacker Quavean Mitchell said. "If we can beat those goals, then the goal is go farther into state, probably."
University begins the 2019 season against Waco this Friday at 7:30 p.m.
