WACO, Texas (KWTX) In district 12-6A, wins can be tough to find, and Waco High second-year head coach Kwame Cavil is hoping that's no longer the case for his Lions.
Waco won the 2018 season opener against their intra-city rival University last season, but then went on to lose nine consecutive games.
The offense failed to reach 20 points in any of those losses. Not only that, but the defense surrendered an average of 45 points per game.
"We're trying to get better at everything all over the board," senior running back and safety Naquavian Mathis said. "Leadership, team communication, we still have a little bit to work on, but we feel like we're ready."
Waco will return six starters on each side of the ball, so it's not a majorly inexperienced team. A decision on a starting quarterback will be between sophomore Devion Long or Nate Reyna.
The Lions have a few things in mind to not only pick up a few wins in district play, but hopefully contend for a playoff spot.
"I'm going after a thousand yards or more," senior running back Jaydon Ridge said. "We're coming together as a team, working, and putting in the effort to get the W."
"I'm trying to be a leader of this team, defense-wise," senior defensive back Keith Guillory II said. "I'm trying to get a lot of sacks, tackles, picks and trying to make a name for myself."
Waco will begin the season this Friday at Waco ISD Stadium against the University Trojans, a team that the Lions have beaten nine straight times.
