KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) The Ellison Eagles going in to their second year under head coach Todd Wright after going 4-6 last season. But that 4-6 record from last year doesn't tell the whole story.
The Eagles went 4-4 in district play, and just missed out on the final playoff spot by one game. The problem is, they beat the bottom four teams and lost to the top four teams that made the playoffs. Ellison will need to get over that hump if they want to make the playoffs like they did in 2017.
"We're stronger than we were last year, were older than we were last year and hopefully we are better coached than we were last year,” said Head Coach, Todd Wright.
If they are able to do that, it'll be thanks in no small part to last year's district MVP Breezion Spiller
The senior threw for over 2,000 yards and 11 touchdowns last year, and rushed for over 700 yards and scored 13 touchdowns as well. But Spiller had the benefit of having the dynamic running back and return man, Tye Hill in the backfield. Fortunately for the Ellison they have more depth and experience this year than they have had in a long time. The Eagles will have eight returning starters on defense and six on offense.
“We have a lot of returning talent but we also have good young dudes coming out and working their tails off every day like we do,” said senior defensive lineman, Daylan Littlejohn. “Making a name for themselves out here.”
“I want to try to build like a dynasty,” said senior offensive lineman, Kaleb Luna. “Like a legacy to build on after I leave. To get into playoffs. To keep going further and further.
Ellison will open the season against the always tough 5-A A&M consolidated in College Station....
