AUSTIN, Texas (Baylor Athletics) Baylor softball dropped its regular season finale, 3-1, to No. 10 Texas Sunday afternoon in Austin.
Lou Gilbert got Baylor’s first hit of the day in the top of the first with a slow-rolling single to third base. It was the lone BU hit until things started rolling for the Lady Bears (18-31, 2-16) two innings later.
Nicky Dawson dropped the perfectly placed single in the space between the UT pitcher, shortstop and second baseman to get on base with one out in the top of the third. She moved to second when Gilbert grounded out to second. Dawson came around to score two batters later when Goose McGlaun singled to right field to give Baylor a 1-0 lead.
Texas (41-12, 12-6) threatened to get on the board in the bottom of the first inning with runners on the corners and no outs. Regan Green then struck out Miranda Elish for the first out the frame. The clean-up hitter Mary Iakopo stepped to the plate and hit a fly ball to center field. Gilbert caught the ball and fired a throw that hit Hannah Thompson perfectly at home plate to keep a Longhorn from scoring. Madi O’Neal then caught a fly ball in left field for the final out of the inning.
That propelled the BU defense as the Lady Bears retired the Longhorns in order each of the next three innings.
In her final collegiate start, Regan Green gave up two runs off four hits with four strikeouts and zero walks through 4.2 innings of work. Sidney Holman pitched the remaining 1.1 innings and allowed one run off two hits with a strikeout.
“It’s always emotional to end a season," Baylor head coach Glenn Moore said. "We invest a tremendous amount of our lives into these student-athletes and a disappointing season requires no less. It was nice to see Regan finish with two great performances against top 10 teams. Madi O’Neal has also competed well throughout the year. We had a great chance to win today. I wish I knew how many games we’ve lost because of not making routine plays. This was a year and a schedule we had to make all the routine plays and many times we failed and couldn’t recover. I am proud that we fought until the very end, the very last pitch. It hurts badly but we will be back quickly.”
