IRVING, Texas (Baylor Athletics) After a 5-0 start to the season for the first time under head coach Ryan McGuyre, Baylor volleyball is ranked a program-best No. 5 in the AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 Poll, released Monday afternoon.
The No. 5 ranking shatters the previous the all-time program record set last season at No. 12.
Prior to last season, BU was ranked for 10 straight weeks and peaked at No. 17 in 2009, which stood as the program-high ranking for eight years in the 37-year history of the AVCA poll.
The Bears are ranked for the 40th time in program history and have received votes in the poll for 29 straight weeks dating back to the 2017 season.
BU is 3-0 against ranked opponents so far in 2019, beating No. 18 Creighton, No. 4 Wisconsin and No. 11 Marquette in the non-conference season.
Baylor is the second-highest ranked Big 12 team behind No. 3 Texas.
PRESSLEY, MCGHEE EARN WEEKLY HONORS
Junior Yossiana Pressley and freshman Kara McGhee were named Big 12 Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, announced by the conference office Monday afternoon.
Pressley extends her program record with her 12th weekly honor while McGhee earns her first career award. Pressley has now earned the offensive award on eight different occasions.
Pressley led the league in total kills (62) and kills per set (6.15) in a week that saw her put down 31 kills at No. 4 Wisconsin and 20 kills at No. 11 Marquette. In Baylor’s match against the 11th-ranked Golden Eagles, she had 44 swings and zero errors for the 3-0 sweep.
At the net, McGhee led the Big 12 in total blocks (14) and blocks per set (1.40) to help BU earn a top-five ranking in the newest AVCA poll. Compiling six blocks each against the Badgers and Golden Eagles, her efforts against Marquette allowed BU to compile a season-high 14 blocks and hold the 11th-ranked team in the country to a .148 hitting effort, including -.026 in the first set.
Pressley and McGhee earn Baylor’s first two weekly awards of the season. BU had eight weekly selections last season. The 2017 squad holds the single-season program record with 15 honors.
No. 5 Baylor returns home for the first time this season to host the Hampton Inn & Suites Waco North Baylor Invitational Thursday through Saturday. BU will face Houston Thursday at 7 p.m. CT, followed by a matchup against Tennessee Saturday at 1 p.m.
