WACO, TX (KWTX) The Baylor Bears couldn't ask for a better start to Big 12 play as they sweep the West Virginia Mountaineers with a 10-4 victory on Sunday.
The Bears (16-6, 3-0) got behind the Mountaineers (13-10, 0-3) early after Ryan Leckich gave up three runs in the first inning. Leckich (2-0) has had a ton of success this season coming out of the bullpen, but the lefty had trouble finding the strike zone in his first start of the year.
Baylor was able to get a run back in the bottom of the second after a double by Davion Downey and an RBI single by Josh Bissonette.
The Bears were held in check until the seventh inning when they erupted for six runs to take a 7-4 lead. Nick Loftin and Richard Cunningham got things rolling with two out RBI singles to make it 4-3. After an intentional walk of Davis Wendzel to load the bases, Andy Thomas was able to draw a walk to force in the game tying run. All-American Shea Langeliers was able to follow that up with a two-RBI double to give the Bears a 6-4 lead. Baylor was able to plate another run on a wild pitch by reliever Tristen Hudson.
Andy Thomas capped things off in the eighth with a three-run home run to give the game it's 10-4 final score.
The Bears will now have a two game mid-week series against Texas Southern starting on Tuesday (3/26).
