After speculation that former Baylor coach Art Briles might be a candidate for the job, Missouri State has announced the hiring of Bobby Petrino as its head football coach.
Prior to the announcement Wednesday morning, a source confirmed to KWTX that Briles was never contacted by Missouri State.
Several reports had linked Briles to the job.
The rumors began Tuesday night, after the school's president tweeted that Missouri State would be hiring "one of the best football coaches in America" on Wednesday.
The Springfield News Leader reported Wednesday morning Briles and Petrino were potential candidates.
Briles left Baylor in 2016 amid a sexual assault scandal surrounding the football program.
Petrino was fired by Arkansas back in April 2012, after he was injured in a motorcycle accident involving his 25-year-old mistress, whom he hired to work for the program.
Missouri State opens the 2020 season at Oklahoma.
