Classroom Champions: Gatesville's Kennedy Berry

GATESVILLE, Texas (KWTX) Kennedy Berry is gearing up for another softball season.

The Gatesville senior is a catcher for the Lady Hornets, who are hoping to improve on the 24 wins and second-round playoff appearance last season.

"I'm just looking forward to getting to play with my team," Berry said. "It's always fun being out here. I just have a great time."

The Gatesville class of 2019's salutatorian, whose best friend happens to be valedictorian, is also the 4H club president, and is a member of the band, serving as Gatesville's marching band drum major.

"We go through a tryout process where we audition in front of the directors and conduct some," Berry said. "We'll teach someone how to do a marching fundamental."

"She's the quintessential student athlete," Gatesville softball coach Jaime Villarrial said. "She does everything we ask her to do in the classroom, community and on the softball field."

Kennedy hopes to gain another 1st-team All-District softball honor before studying geology at Tarleton State.

"She takes her academics serious as her softball and she practices hard on the field and works hard in the classroom and it really shows," Villarial said.
