WACO, Texas (KWTX) Waco High School senior Sam Barron plays varsity baseball, has participated in powerlifting and cross country, and does it all while maintaining an impressive GPA.
If it wasn't for his short stint with the powerlifting program, Barron may not have ever had enough strength to hit a baseball over the outfield wall.
"Last year I hit a home run. it was the only home run I'd ever hit," Barron said. "I'm not usually a power hitter and it was something I'll remember for a long time."
A labrum injury forced Sam away from powerlifting, but he's still got the mental strength as well. On a 100 scale regarding GPA, Sam sits at 102.9, one reason why he's a 3-year academic achiever and an Academic All-State member for Waco High's varsity baseball team.
"It's been my focus. Classroom comes first," Barron said. "I know I'm here to learn. Playing baseball comes with the dedication you learn while in the classroom. It's just as important listening to my teachers as it is my coaches."
He's hitting over .300 for the Lions as the team's right fielder. He can play any outfield position, but he also enjoys pitching.
"I like to be on the mound but will play wherever coach tells me to," Barron said. "I watch a lot of baseball and follow the Rangers really closely. I started playing in second grade and have really just picked it up and ran with it since then. I have a lot of fun playing it."
