WEST, Texas (KWTX) West high school senior Tyler Kaluza is a three sport athlete, lettering in football and basketball. However, his favorite sport is America’s past time.
“I think it's just playing with my teammates,” said Tyler. “I love coming out here and playing with your friends every day. That’s just the best part. You get to go to school with them, come out here and play the great game of baseball. That’s the best part.”
Kaluza saw success in baseball early in high school, winning the state championship with West in 2016. But it wasn’t just his bat or his glove that impressed head coach Cory Beckham.
“He came into the program and was impressive in the classroom,” said Beckham. “And showed some dedication for his academics. Not all baseball players or athletes are into their grades, but he's been a good role model for the other student’s athletes in the school.”
Beckham isn't exaggerating about Kaluza's prowess in the classroom. The Trojans’ lead off hitter is ranked second in his class and was recently accepted into Texas A&M University where he will majoring in either Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
“My uncle used to work at NASA,” said Tyler. “He was an aerospace engineer. He used to tell me stories of when he was working at NASA. And I thought, that's always interested me. And I’ve always had a fascination for space.”
