WACO, Texas (KWTX) The FCA Victory Bowl games Saturday will be the final appearances for some local football or volleyball athletes. In some aspects, their trip to the Boys & Girls Club Friday featured their last-ever practice.
"I think it's real cool to get out here and meet these little kids and see what their life is like living out here," McGregor's Cade Zacharias said. "Spending time with them, getting to know them and know you, it's important to make that connection. It gives them some confidence and makes them feel like they're the man out here."
While most of the football players spent time outside in the Texas heat that surpassed 90 degrees accompanied by little wind, some recent volleyball and cheer graduates played the role of coach or teacher with aspiring athletes, cheerleaders or dancers in a much cooler environment -- Richter Avenue's Boys & Girls Club gym.
"We're already on our third day and it's already gone by so fast," West High School's Lesley Carroll said. "Each day has been so full and fun. My main thing was not wanting to come in here and sit around and sleep through all of it. I wanted to soak up all of it."
All of the athletes involved took part in a pep rally Friday evening before competing in their respective sports Saturday.
"Our coaches have been talking all week about sportsmanship," Zacharias said. "That's our goal during the game is to go out there and be good sportsmen."
"It's been amazing and I'll remember it forever," Carroll said. "The pictures I've taken, the people I've met, the coaches, I'll remember it forever. I want to thank my cheer coach from West for telling me about it and allowing me to sign up for it. It's been really rewarding and a lot of fun."
The volleyball game will be played at University High School Saturday at 12:30 p.m., while the football game will be played later in the day at 6:30 p.m.
