Gatesville hires Luke Howard as head football coach

GATESVILLE, Texas (KWTX) The Gatesville Hornets have hired Luke Howard to replace Kyle Cooper, who recently left the school to take a position on Art Briles' coaching staff at Mount Vernon.

Howard graduated from Gatesville High School in 2007 and has spent time as an assistant coach at Valley Mills, Cuero and UMHB. He was hired by Cooper earlier this year as an assistant head coach.

"The process has been kind of an unexpected one," Howard said. "The process has been great, our administration has been wonderful, and they've been very forthright in how they've come about everything. (I'm) definitely excited about the opportunity and looking forward to getting to work."

The timing for a head coaching hire usually isn't in July, but Howard is taking it in stride and has confidence in the staff that's already at Gatesville.

"We have great coordinators, great assistant coaches and really guys who are in this profession for the right reasons," Howard said. "They care about the kids, they want the kids to be successful, and they're willing to do whatever it takes to make kids successful."

Gatesville begins the 2019 season at Midlothian Heritage August 30.
