Holmes leads after 1st round at Royal Portrush

ROYAL PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland American J.B. Holmes is the first round leader at the Open Championship in Northern Ireland. Holmes shot a 5 under par round to lead Shane Lowry by one and hold the lead in a major after a round for the first time in his professional career.

Ireland’s Shane Lowry fired a 4-under 67 in ever-changing weather to set the early target at the first British Open in Northern Ireland in 51 years. Lowry says he is operating “a little more under the radar than the other guys. "

The spotlight was unkind to betting favorite Rory McIlroy, who once shot a 61 at Royal Portrush as a 16-year-old amateur. The course got its revenge Thursday as McIlroy shot a 79, including a quadruple-bogey 8 after a losing battle with a bush.

Tiger Woods says he was "sore" during his round of 78 and wasn't moving as well as he did in winning the Masters in April in sunny Georgia. The 15-time major champion says there are certain shots he can't hit the way he used to because of "Father Time and some procedures I've had over time." Woods had four back surgeries in a span of about three years to 2017.
