Killeen student honored as MaxPreps Semper Fidelis Athlete of the Month

KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) Today at Killeen High School, KHS football player Al Amir Ward was honored as the MaxPreps Semper Fidelis Male Athlete of the Month.

“For them to notice like 'yeah he's going out there and working hard and it's paying off' you know it just means a lot to me,” said Ward, a junior at KHS. “And to notice like that somebody sees me out there and somebody knows that I’ve been working hard. And that somebody nominated me for this is just great man.”

The Athlete of the Month award is given to one male and one female athlete all across the country from September until May.

According to a press release the “title is awarded to athletes that any American community would be proud to call its own. These athletes not only embody the fighting spirit, the willingness to engage and determination to defeat any obstacle, they excel athletically and academically and are focused on making the community around them a better place.”

The winners receive a presentation in their hometown, and featured article and video on MaxPreps and CBSSports. The athletes will also be recognized as a Semper Fidelis all-American, and will have the opportunity to attend the Battles Won Academy in Washington, DC in July, a leadership academy hosted by the United States Marine Corps. In addition to all of that Amir was able to meet five-time Pro Bowler and three-time Super Bowl champion with the Dallas cowboys, Jay Novacek.

“It's been awhile since I’ve had a uniform on, and them wanting to get a picture with me and stuff like that is neat, but I receive a whole lot more than they do,” said Novacek. “Because I get to see individuals that want to work hard and want to do good things not just on the football field but in life.”
