GATESVILLE, Texas Gatesville head football coach and athletic director Kyle Cooper has resigned and will leave the Hornets to join Art Briles' staff in Mount Vernon.
Cooper's resignation comes just over a month before the start of fall workouts for the Gatesville football team. It also means one of the most tenured coaches in Central Texas is leaving a program he's turned into a perennial playoff contender.
Cooper coached 13 seasons in Gatesville and led the Hornets to a 63- 67 record overall during that time. His last season was a 3-7 campaign last fall. Cooper and his Hornets did have some playoff success over the years, he led Gatesville deep into the postseason just a few years ago.
Cooper will now join the Mount Vernon coaching staff as an assistant and work with new head coach Art Briles. Cooper and Briles have a relationship that includes a few of Cooper's former players playing at Baylor under Briles.
