ARLINGTON, Texas The La Vega Pirates are 4A state champions for the second time in four years after beating Liberty Hill 35-21 in Arlington.
La Vega used big plays in the second half to score quick points on their way to a win. The 35-21 victory gives Don Hyde his first title as La Vega head coach.
Jar'quae Walton scored first for La Vega in the first quarter on a long run. But a Liberty Hill touchdown tied the game at 7 before the half. Things changed dramatically after halftime.
Donta Stuart returned the opening kickoff of the 2nd half 94 yards for a touchdown to make it 14-7. Then Ara Rauls III hit Malachi Wright on a long touchdown pass after Wright made a defender miss and the Pirates had a 21-7 lead.
La Vega's next touchdown was another big pass play from Rauls to Wright. Wright caught a pair of long TD passes for the Pirates. Then John Richards put the game away in the 4th with a tough touchdown run.
