MCC baseball falls to San Jacinto, awaits Region V Tournament

WACO, Texas (KWTX) The McLennan Highlanders lost their regular-season finale 8-6 to the San Jacinto Gators and will now wait 10 days until playing again in the Region V Tournament.

MCC (42-12, 27-5) can wrap up the outright top spot from the Region V North Division if Grayson (37-12, 23-5) loses one of its four remaining games against North Central Texas College (28-18, 16-12) later this week.

"This is the best conference record we've had since I've been here," MCC head coach Mitch Thompson said. "Having played a top-15 strength of schedule in the country, that I think is something obviously we have to be proud of."

After a three-game losing streak to begin the month of March, the Highlanders ripped off a 21-game winning streak before it was snapped by Grayson in mid-April.

While MCC is batting .305 as a team, the pitching staff has been just as efficient. Of the seven pitchers with at least 24 innings on the mound, six of them display an earned run average of 3.29 or better.

"I would've preferred to have the bye week a long time ago," Thompson said. "Once you're playing well, and once you're going, you don't want to stop. We've got 10 days, but we'll use them to our benefit. We'll take finals, get healthy physically, and we'll have to play some intrasquad games to stay sharp."

If McLennan earns the No. 1 seed in the Region V Tournament scheduled for Friday, May 10, they would play at 5 p.m. However, if the Highlanders lock down the No. 2 seed from the North Division, they would play at 10 a.m.
