LUFKIN, Texas The McLennan Highlassies dropped a 79-60 game to the Angelina Lady Roadrunners on the road this evening in Lufkin.
Anastacia Mickens drained a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 8:40 to play in the first quarter to put McLennan on the board. The Highlassies led 5-4 with 7:57 to play in the first. Angelina used an 8-0 run over the next two minutes to begin pulling away. The Lady Roadrunners led by eight, 15-7, with 3:42 remaining in the first quarter and ended the period on an 8-4 run to take the 23-11 lead into the second quarter.
McLennan kept pace with the Roadrunners through eight minutes of the second. Angelina led 37-23 with 2:25 to play in the half. A pair of free throws by Gabby Cleveland, a steal and drive by Harmony Pettis and a driving layup by KeeKee Nowlin pulled the Highlassies within eight, 37-29 with a minute to go before the half. Taylor Jacob hit a 3-pointer from the corner with time winding down to give Angelina the 40-29 advantage at the break.
The Highlassies and Lady Roadrunners traded baskets through the majority of the third quarter allowing Angelina to maintain its double-digit lead. The Lady Roadrunners led 51-38 with 2:42 to go in the third and ended the period on a 10-2 run to extend the lead to 21 going to the fourth, 61-40.
Angelina led by as many as 26 in the final quarter. McLennan made a run late in the game but was unable to recover.
KeeKee Nowlin led the Highlassies with 12 points. Anastacia Mickens and Raveen Blue scored 10 points each.
McLennan returns to action Saturday, hosting Lone Star College-CyFair at 2 p.m. to close out the fall portion of the schedule.
