Report: Cowboys to hire McCarthy as new coach

The official news of Jason Garrett not returning to the Cowboys has been followed by a report that former Packers coach Mike McCarthy has been hired as the team's head coach.

ESPN confirmed a report Monday morning that was first reported by Fox Sports.

On Sunday, Fox Sports's Jay Glazer explained McCarthy's interview with the team on the Fox NFL Sunday pregame show.

"That went so well I'm told Mike McCarthy is actually still there, spent an extra day in Dallas," Glazer reported.

Then on Monday morning, NFL Network reporter Jane Slater tweeted that a source informed her McCarthy has already begun to put together a staff.

McCarthy guided the Packers to eight straight playoff berths and a Super Bowl title.

The Cowboys are looking for their first coach since 2006.
