Mexia: NFL player holding 'Match Challenge' for food banks

MEXIA, Texas (KWTX) A Central Texas native is doing his part to help combat hunger.

New York Jets starting left tackle Kelvin Beachum who is originally from Mexia, initiated a 'Match Challenge' for five food banks across the country including two in Texas.

Beachum will donate $5,000 to each of the five food banks, pledging to double that donation if matched by community members for a potential, personal gift of $50,000.

The challenge will end on Monday, a day before World Food Day.

World Food Day is celebrated internationally on Oct.16 every year to honor the founding date of the food and agriculture organization of the United Nations in 1945.

“Limestone County, where I am from, is different from New jersey and New York,” said Beachum.

"But at the same time the need is still the same. For me hunger is a basic need. And if you have people, and especially kids who don’t know where their next meal is coming from, i want to find a way to be a part of that solution."

Every dollar donated translates to 10 meals.

Some of Beauchum’s teammates have already pledged their money to help Beachum’s challenge, including the rest of the offensive line and rookie quarterback Sam Darnold.
