KERRVILLE, Texas The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor basketball team pulled away in the second half and the Cru rolled to an 83-64 victory over Schreiner University Thursday night in Kerrville. UMHB is now 1-0 to start the season while the Mountaineers drop to 0-1 on the year with the loss.
Schreiner jumped out to an early 9-3 lead before the Cru started to claw its way back. Shaqur Martin’s jumper gave UMHB its first lead of the game at 17-16 with 10:46 left in the first half. The Mountaineers retook the lead at 24-21 before the Cru tied it up at 26. It would stay that way for almost three and a half minutes before Mike Davis hit a layup to give UMHB the lead for good. The Cru took a 36-31 lead into the break. UMHB opened the second half with an 8-3 run to push the lead into double figures at 44-34. The lead would grow to 19 points and Schreiner never got closer than 13 points the rest of the way.
Demarius Cress topped the Cru with 15 points and five assists and he hit 3-6 from three-point range. Sam Moore added 14 points, Brian Long had 12 points and LaKendric Hyson chipped in 11 points and six rebounds. Martin pulled down a team-high eight rebounds and 11 different players scored for UMHB. The Cru shot 52 percent from the field in the win and hit 7-17 from three-point range. UMHB out rebounded Schreiner 41-36 on the night.
Matthew Rindahl was the only Mountaineer to reach double figures with 10 points. Schreiner shot 32 percent from the field and went 9-26 from beyond the arc. Both teams committed 15 turnovers in the contest.
UMHB will continue its season-opening three-game road trip with a 3 pm tip at Texas Lutheran University Saturday in Seguin. The Cru will then take on Trinity University next Wednesday in San Antonio.
