JACKSON, Mississippi The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women’s basketball team shook off any superstitions as the Cru rolled to its 13th consecutive victory with a 60-38 win over Belhaven University Thursday night in Jackson, Mississippi. 12th-ranked UMHB improves to 13-0 overall and 5-0 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. The loss drops the Blazers to 6-6 overall and 2-3 in ASC play on the year.
The Cru scored the first five points of the game and never trailed in the contest. UMHB led by as many as nine points in the first quarter before Belhaven battled back to tie the game at 15 early in the second. The Cru exploded for a 13-2 run to extend the lead to double figures and took a 32-22 lead into halftime. The lead would grow to 20 points midway through the third period and UMHB coasted to the win from there.
Alicia Blackwell was 8-12 from the field to score a game-high 20 points for the Cru. Kendall Rollins hit 7-12 shots and scored 19 points for UMHB while Hannah Holt added 13 points. The Cru shot 39 percent from the field as a team and forced 21 turnovers in the game. UMHB’s defense held the Blazers to just 45 shots on the night.
Lauren Brooks had 10 points and a game-best 11 rebounds for Belhaven. Peyton Papenburg also scored 10 points. Belhaven shot just 17 percent in the fourth quarter and only hit 31 percent for the game. The Blazers were just 2-9 from three-point range in the loss.
The Cru women will take on Louisiana College in a 1 pm start Saturday in Pineville, Louisiana. Following that contest, UMHB will return home to host three games next week.
