WACO, Texas (KWTX) If Texas Tech wins the men’s NCAA national championship Monday night on the heels of Baylor’s win in the women’s tournament final, it would be the first time that Big 12 teams clinched both the men’s and women’s title in the same year and only the eighth time that men’s and women’s teams from the same conference brought home titles.
Baylor’s Lady Bears snagged the women’s national title Sunday night with a last-second, one-point win over the women from Norte Dame, the third national title for the team under head coach Kim Mulkey.
A Red Raiders win against Virginia would complete the sweep of the NCAA tournament, and with the University of Texas winning the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) championship, that would mean three of the nation’s four first place basketball trophies go to Texas schools.
Texas Christian University’s women’s team made it to the semifinals of the women’s NIT this year, but lost 59-53 to Arizona, which went on to win the championship.
In fact, Big XII media director Russell Luna said, since the NCAA began a women’s tournament in 1982, only seven times have both trophies gone to the same conference and only once before has that sweep included an NIT trophy within the same conference.
NCAA records show teams from the Southeastern Conference won both NCAA titles in 1996, 1998 and 2007, from the Big East in 2003, 2004 and 2013 and from the Atlantic Athletic Conference in 2014.
The Big East, in 2003, also owned the NIT men’s trophy.
Men’s and women’s teams from Connecticut own six of those titles.
