COPPERAS COVE, Texas (KWTX) A head-on crash involving a car and an 18-wheeler send a seriously injured driver to a local hospital and closed down a busy highway bridge Monday morning in Copperas Cove

The U.S. Highway 190/Interstate 14 bypass was closed Monday from the split with Business 190 east of Copperas Cove to the intersection of FM 2657/Business 190 on the west side of the city while crew from the Texas Department of Transportation repaired damage caused by the crash.

Authorities were detouring traffic to Business 190 through the city.

TxDOT said it did not have an estimate of when the bridge would be reopened to traffic.

The accident happened at around 6:30 a.m. when a westbound Hyundai sedan crossed into the eastbound lanes on the long bridge and struck the 18-wheeler head-on.

The car’s driver was flown to a local hospital with what police described as “apparent severe injuries.”
